A concrete garage floor often ends up staining, producing dust, or losing its regular appearance. Should we then strip everything, pour a new screed or apply several layers of resin? Not necessarily. When the defects remain superficial, clip-on tiles can cover the support without incurring a lengthy renovation.
Before starting, however, it is necessary to distinguish between simply aging concrete and truly degraded soil.
What condition should the garage floor be in?
Yes, it is possible to lay slabs directly on old concrete if it remains stable and sufficiently flat. Stains, irregular color, small scratches or a dusty appearance do not automatically make the media incompatible.
On the other hand, the crumbly parts must be removed. A large hole, a crack that continues to evolve or a marked difference in level can prevent the slabs from resting correctly. These defects must be repaired before installation. The same caution is required in the presence of infiltration: a new coating improves the surface, but does not address the cause of the water ingress.
The test is quite simple. By passing a long ruler over the ground, you can quickly identify hollows and bumps. It is also necessary to scrape the fragile areas to check that the concrete does not disintegrate.
Is it necessary to carry out leveling before installation?
The leveling is not systematic. It becomes useful when irregularities prevent a stable base from being obtained or when several slabs risk toppling under the vehicle's passage.
On an old but relatively regular garage floor, a lighter preparation is generally sufficient: remove the non-adherent parts, carefully vacuum up the dust and degrease the dirtiest areas. The surface must be clean before beginning assembly.
The objective is not to obtain visually perfect concrete, since it will be covered. Above all, it is necessary to create a solid base so that the future garage floor covering maintains its stability.
How to quickly renovate a concrete floor?
When the media is compatible, garage floor tiles allow you to cover concrete without glue and without drying time. The models designed by SquareFLOOR assemble directly thanks to their integrated clipping system.
Laying generally begins at an angle or along an axis defined in advance. The slabs are fitted together gradually, then cut around the edges to respect the dimensions of the room. The garage can be reused immediately after installation: it is not necessary to wait several days before parking the car there again.
This speed constitutes one of the main advantages of clip-on garage tiles. It allows you to transform dusty or stained concrete in a few hours, without permanently immobilizing the space.
Will the new floor support a car?
The chosen surface must be explicitly intended for the passage and parking of vehicles. A car rests its weight on four relatively small contact areas: a simple decorative slab intended for housing is therefore not suitable.
Polypropylene garage slabs are designed for these constraints and can achieve, depending on the model, a static resistance of several tonnes per square meter. This characteristic, combined with installation on stable concrete, makes it possible to obtain a floor suitable for daily automobile use.
Covering a damaged garage floor is therefore not about blindly hiding its defects. After a simple diagnosis and some localized repairs if necessary, clip-on installation offers a quick solution to find a clean, stable and usable surface without prolonged work.
